Star of TLC’s The Little Couple, Jen Arnold talks about her fight after she was diagnosed with cancer. Jen Arnold was quoted saying “There are moments I feel just terrible. I can’t believe it is happening. Other times, I feel like this is just a bump in the road.”
Jen Arnold and her husband Bill Klein were in India to pick up their to-be-adopted two year old daughter Zoey along with their three-year old son Will who was adopted earlier this year in China. All of sudden, Arnold started bleeding and soon she contacted her OB-GYN and decided soon to fly to her home at Houston while her husband Klein stayed back along with nanny and kids in order to finalize Zoey’s paperwork.
Arnold told that “My initial thoughts were all about Zoey. But then the bleeding got worse and I was feeling light-headed. It was a hard decision, but I had to go home.” Back in Houston, Arnold was diagnosed with the 3rd stage of choriocarcinoma, a reare cancer that had occurred with a pregnancy in September. Arnold ruefully told “The one time I get pregnant, I get cancer.” However, the doctors had to opt for hysterectomy, when the cancerous masses initially didn’t respond to chemotherapy.
Her doctor, director of oncology gynecology at the Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Concepcion R. Diaz-Arrastia, made every attempt from his end and had contacted several specialists across the country for the appropriate treatment of chemotherapy. Her doctor was quoted saying “We wanted to avoid surgery in her case because of her shortened airway and the difficulties she has had in the past with surgeries. But we felt we had no choice. The disease was not responding to chemotherapy. We had to do this in order to save her life. I called oncologists in Los Angeles, Baltimore, New York, Houston and no one had experience with treating this type of cancer in a person with skeletal dysplasia. It was a very rare cancer, rare that it was found in a little person … a very rare situation.”
