Actor Russell Johnson, famously known as Professor Roy Hinkley on Gilligan’s Island took his final breath few days back at the age of 89. The reason for the actor’s death is believed to be kidney failure. Russell spent his last moments at his home in Washington in presence of his wife Constance Dane and daughter Kim Johnson.
On talking to Dane, she said “He died at home, peaceful, in his sleep at 5:21 a.m. today. [He was] a very brave guy who knew what he wanted and he wanted to be at home.” However his agent was quoted saying that his death came quickly. Eisentstadt further added “I spoke to him right before the holidays and he did an autograph job. He had just done that and he was fine.”
Expressing grief on this sad occasion, Dawn Wells, Russell’s one of the co-actor on the show, who played the role of Mary Ann posted a picture of herself, Johnson and Bob Denver on Facebook. She further said “My 2 favorite people are now gone. The Professor [passed] away this morning. My heart is broken.”
Russell Johnson who was born in Pennsylvania has joined the U.S Army Air Force just after attending his high-school and flew combat missions during the World War II before he decided to pursue acting as his career. The actor featured into various television shows and films throughout his 50s and 60s which includes Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight ZoneI. After this, he was chosen for the role of professor on Gilligan’s Island in 1964.
This year will mark the 50th anniversary of this hit show which featured seven men and women who were stranded together on an island when their ship S.S. Minnow got wrecked during a storm. Russell’s some of the famous appearances during his tenure as an actor for three decades 70s, 80s and 90s includes his roles on The Jeffersons and Dynasty, Lassie, Gunsmoke.
