His short answer was simply to do whatever they tell you to. However of course, there are a lot of factors to consider such as the following:
• STAY CALM
This is the most important thing! It is hard to be calm in such situations but to maintain a clear mind will help a lot to maintain a stable thought process. If you panic, there is a greater chance that the gunman would panic and might end up shooting you ahead.
• MAINTAIN EYE CONTACT
Establishing eye contact with the assailant will reinforce to their conscience that both of you are human beings. This may perhaps be an effective way to gain their sympathy.
• KNOW YOUR ATTACKER
Different attacker has different reason for putting a gun to one’s head and each may require a different response. It may be a robbery, hostage situation or kidnapping. Robbery is most likely to occur and the common factor of the said situation is that theses assailants has no purpose to kill you but only to threaten you since if they are indeed determined to kill you, they could have just done it on the first place.
• GIVE WHAT THEY’RE LOOKING FOR
Unless they want to rape you, you should give in to their demands. If he is a robber, he simply wants your wallet so just give it to him but just remember to voice out your actions calmly and move swiftly.
• STUDY THE ATTACKER’S APPEARANCE
As you are buying time, observe distinct feature of the attacker in order for you to describe efficiently his appearance to the police afterwards.
• TRY TO STAY QUITE AS POSSIBLE
Don’t you dare start screaming since you are only going to stress yourself as well as the assailant and the responding officer. In a hostage case, you might also disturb the correspondence between your attacker and the officer if you don’t keep quite.
For his final tip, Mr. Freeman pointed out that one should stay away from the assailant’s head as they can!
