Well, there are some huge events taking place in the universe even though its effects on out routines life are not felt prominently or apparently. However, reports from NASA suggest that the sun has completely “flipped upside down” wherein its North and South poles are reversed in order to reach the mid-point of Solar Cycle 24. Dr. Tony Philips Nasa’s scientist said in an interview “A reversal of the sun’s magnetic field is, literally, a big event.” He further added “The domain of the sun’s magnetic influence (also known as the ‘heliosphere’) extends billions of kilometers beyond Pluto. Changes to the field’s polarity ripple all the way out to the Voyager probes, on the doorstep of interstellar space.”
In order to mark the event, Nasa has released a video showing the visualization of the entire process.
At the start of the video, it shows the sun in Solar Cycle 23 has its positive polarity on the top (green lines) and negative polarity at the bottom (purple lines). Both set of line then move to opposite direction showing a flip around taking place in 2002 after completing the sun’s previous cycle. Both these set of lines that represent the opposite magnetic field begin to work to set their way in order to culminate the latest flip.
Nasa’s Karen c. Fox said “At the height of each magnetic flip, the sun goes through periods of more solar activity, during which there are more sunspots, and more eruptive events such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections.”
In addition to this, Dr. Phillips shared his knowledge and view saying “Cosmic rays are also affected. These are high-energy particles accelerated to nearly light speed by supernova explosions and other violent events in the galaxy.”
